Reflections on the Netherlands/Germany Trip 2019:

The prospect of having another crack at sailing to Denmark appealed to me, but more importantly I knew how much it meant to Rex to reach this goal.
We had a plan, it was a very tight plan, but we gave it a go. However, it wasn't to be. Time constraints, foul weather and other constraints conspired against us. Common-sense dictated that we would be flogging ourselves trying to achieve the dream, and not really enjoying the adventure. Acceptance of the need to turn back came as we were skirting the German Frisian Islands.
I could sense Rex was slowly bottling his disappointment up and it was getting him down, but he wasn't opening up about it. I started a frank discussion, and explained that to me, the destination was not what the adventure was all about. To me the actual journey, enjoying myself with a good mate was the essence of the trip. We could make our way back visiting old haunts we loved, and taking the opportunity to discover new, unexpected locations. All in all, I was not disappointed one little bit.
The effect this discussion had on Rex was remarkable, it was like telling a doomed man he had a new lease in life. It put a huge smile on his face and seemed to make him look years younger. I was pleased.
We did indeed have an enjoyable journey back and made new discoveries.
    Long may these adventures continue.
