Meryl kindly allowed Rex a pass out for the whole of June. As per usual, very little went according to plan. Our initial plan to head up the Westerschelde to Antwerp was turned upside down by Rex's tooth ailment, plus a two-day delay in departure due to malevolent weather on the North Sea. Life became even more complicated just 40 miles out across the North Sea when we noticed the bilges were awash with muddy water.
The latter issue immediately impacted our first port of call on the continent, but we rapidly learned how to adapt to the problem, and over the course of the trip we deduced where the water was emanating from.
A never-ending string of lows sweeping in from the Atlantic brought in much rain and high winds. Indeed, the winds were of such ferocity that we abandoned ideas of sailing up the coast to Ijmuiden, and sailing over large expanses of water such as the Markermeer, IJsselmeer and Wadden Zee.
We were a tad disappointed, but accepted it as an opportunity to return to places in South Holland and Zeeland, that were long overdue a revisit. We thoroughly enjoyed our walks down memory lane, meeting new people, and we even squeezed in a trip to Antwerp.
As is customary, towards the end of our trip, we had to search for a lull in foul weather to make the dash back over the North Sea. Once identified we took the window of opportunity to make the crossing. The early crossing was not wasted, we made the most of our remaining time left on the trip exploring East Anglian waters.
Summing up, this was yet another excellent trip, expanding our knowledge of continental waters, towns and cities once again.
Long may these adventures continue.
Footnote:- The day after our return to Tollesbury, we replaced the leaking water pump with a brand new one, and also identified a water leak in the wash basin in the heads, which we rectified with PTFE tape. Let's hope this cures the water issues.
